Every January, thousands of South African learners open their matric results with anxiety and anticipation. For some, the outcome brings joy. For others, uncertainty. According to the Department of Basic Education’s 2024 report, roughly 34% of candidates did not meet bachelor-level entry requirements, and 18% did not pass at all.
Yet longitudinal studies by the Human Sciences Research Council show that nearly half of those who initially fail ultimately re-enter education through rewrites, bridging courses or vocational training within two years. The lesson is clear: success is seldom linear.
A Constructive Response to a National Challenge
Media City Academy’s This Is Not the End Workshop responds to this national challenge with a constructive, forward-looking approach. Modelled on best practice recovery programmes from Finland and Singapore, the session combines family involvement, practical planning and emotional resilience training.
Globally, the conversation about educational resilience is growing. UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring Report 2024 highlights the importance of second chance systems that keep youth connected to opportunity, while the OECD emphasises “career adaptability” as a key marker of employability.
Turning Disappointment Into Direction
In line with these frameworks, MCA’s January 2026 workshop helps families turn immediate disappointment into a structured action plan. Parents learn to guide their children with empathy and realism, while learners practise goal setting, self-assessment and constructive dialogue.
The result is empowerment. Attendees leave with information and renewed confidence that their story continues. The workshop will take place in January 2026, just before matric results are released, giving families time to think clearly, plan carefully and move forward decisively.
