Our Spring Open Day was filled with energy, curiosity and creative spirit. Attendees explored our working studio complex, met the MCA team, and got a taste of the hands-on experience that sets us apart.
A Day of Creative Energy at Media City Academy
The first days of spring brought more than sunshine to Media City Academy (MCA) — they brought energy, curiosity, and creativity. Our Spring Open Day was a celebration of possibility, drawing in learners, parents, and aspiring creators from across the country to experience what makes MCA unlike any other creative institution in Africa.
“I came to Media City Academy today with my boys because I see a lot of opportunities for them to learn and also to grow in this industry… I think what is different between Media City Academy and many other institutions I know is the fact that there is a learning by doing component. This is basically what sets this institution apart. So I want to make sure that there are part of something that is new, something that is fresh.” Johny Mteba, Parent
Stepping Into the World of Media
Visitors arrived to find themselves inside a fully operational media studio — the beating heart of Media City Academy. Unlike traditional schools, MCA’s classrooms are active production environments. The sound of cameras, lights, and creative collaboration filled the air, setting the tone for an immersive day of exploration.
From the moment guests stepped through the doors, they were surrounded by the real-world energy of film, television, and digital media production. Tours of the facilities gave attendees a glimpse into the professional world our students experience daily. It wasn’t just an open day — it was a window into the future of creative education.
Meeting the Team Behind the Vision
Throughout the day, visitors met the dedicated MCA team — educators, mentors, and industry professionals who guide learners through every stage of their creative journey. These conversations offered valuable insight into MCA’s 70% practical, 30% theory learning model, which emphasizes real-world mastery over rote memorisation.
Educators discussed how MCA equips learners not just with technical skills, but with clarity – clarity about their learning style, career direction, and creative identity. For many parents, it was refreshing to see an approach to education focused on purpose and self-awareness, not just marks.
Hands-On Experience in Action
This interactive experience showed just how dynamic and inclusive the MCA environment is.
Learners don’t sit passively in front of books — they collaborate, create, and bring their ideas to life. It’s a school where imagination meets execution, and where every learner’s potential is given the space to grow.
Conversations That Spark Futures
For many students, the Open Day was their first real look at what a future in the creative industries could be.
Parents also had meaningful discussions about career readiness, creative industry opportunities, and the importance of aligning passion with education. These conversations often shifted perspectives, especially for those who had never considered media and production as viable career paths.
Why MCA Is Different
MCA stands apart because it’s built on one simple idea — that creativity is best learned through doing. As the first creative school in Africa based inside a fully operational media studio, MCA blurs the line between classroom and career. Students don’t just prepare for the industry – they’re part of it from day one.
“I think it [MCA] can offer a lot. You know it can teach you how to branch off into different aspects.” Roland, Gr 11 Student
This unique setting gives learners access to mentors, projects, and opportunities that most students only encounter after graduation. It’s a living, breathing ecosystem where education, innovation, and professional growth coexist.
The Atmosphere: Inspiration Everywhere
The Spring Open Day buzzed with inspiration.
“..Media City Academy is different because here they leave with having applied hours of work within a workspace.” Zenobia Simelane, Head of School
From live studio demos and faculty meet-and-greets to student showcases and behind-the-scenes tours, the day offered a true glimpse into what learning on set feels like. Visitors got to see classrooms that double as working studios, and explore pathways into film, television, sound, and design.
Guests left with new ideas, new confidence, and for many, the realization that a creative career is not just possible — it’s powerful.
A Glimpse Into a Creative Future
As the day wrapped up, the message was clear — creativity has a home at Media City Academy.
Whether a student dreams of directing films, managing productions, editing videos, or telling stories through new media, MCA provides the environment, mentorship, and tools to make it happen.
