What is Media City Academy?
Media City Academy is a specialist training academy in Johannesburg that prepares creatives for work in film, television and related media. The model blends structured theory with intensive practicals inside operating studios so learners build marketable skills from day one.
Is Media City Academy accredited?
Yes. Media City Academy is accredited with MICT SETA and SAQA for programmes aligned to the National Qualifications Framework. Learners graduate with recognised credentials that employers understand.

Both focus on set etiquette, production office competencies, equipment use and core craft skills for entry level employment.

Do you offer short or online courses?
Yes. Business of Film is a six week online course that covers production, legal, funding, distribution and sales for film, TV, documentary and commercials. It is open access.
Admissions and Requirements
Who should apply?
Aspiring storytellers and technicians who want industry aligned, practical training that leads to real roles in the creative economy. School leavers and working adults are welcome.
What are the entry requirements?
Minimum Grade 11 pass with Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3, communication competence at NQF Level 2 and basic computer literacy at NQF Level 3. Course specific auditions or portfolio reviews may apply.
How do I apply?
Select your programme, submit your documents, and complete payment to secure your seat. The admissions team will guide you through each step.
Are there bursaries or sponsored places?
The Academy works with partners in the sector to explore funding avenues for qualifying learners. Enquire during application for current opportunities.
Learning Model and Facilities
How is the learning structured?
A hybrid format. Core theory is delivered online for flexibility. Practicals run in studio, on set and in production offices, with rotating roles across departments to build multi discipline competence.
What facilities will I use?
Television studios, film sets, audio recording rooms, makeup and wardrobe spaces, and editing and post production suites. Equipment and workflows are aligned to industry standards.
Who teaches the classes?
Working producers, directors, writers, performers and technical crew who bring current industry practice into the classroom and onto set. Masterclasses add mentorship and portfolio coaching.
Outcomes and Careers
What skills will I have by the end of the programme?
You will be able to manage production tasks, support departments, source resources, follow safety and ethics, process information for specialist roles, and operate equipment to spec. You also gain the soft skills and business literacy needed to function in real productions.

Typical entry roles include Production Assistant, Camera Assistant, Lighting Assistant, Sound Assistant, Art Department Assistant, Wardrobe Assistant, Runner, Editing Room Assistant, Script Logger, Vision Control Assistant, Teleprompter or Autocue Operator and Studio Floor Assistant.
