Every year, thousands of young South Africans make one of the biggest decisions of their lives with surprisingly little information. They choose qualifications and career paths without ever experiencing the industries they’re preparing to enter. It’s no surprise that many students change direction after their first year of study or discover too late that they’ve chosen a path that doesn’t suit them. The problem isn’t a lack of talent. It’s a lack of exposure.
Take the creative industries. Many learners associate film and television with acting or directing, when those are only a small part of a much bigger picture. Every production depends on writers, producers, cinematographers, editors, production managers, sound specialists, designers, marketers and dozens of other creative professionals working behind the scenes.
The industry itself has changed just as quickly. Streaming platforms, digital content, gaming, social media and creative entrepreneurship have created careers that simply didn’t exist a generation ago. Yet many learners, and often their parents, have had little opportunity to explore what those careers involve or how to access them. That’s where career guidance becomes invaluable. Before choosing a qualification, take the time to understand your strengths, your interests and the kind of work that genuinely excites you. Visit campuses. Speak to lecturers. Meet people already working in the industry. Ask questions. The more you see, the easier it becomes to recognise where you fit.
At Media City Academy, those conversations are part of the journey. Our free Career Pathway Assessment helps prospective students explore the many opportunities within the creative industries and better understand which direction best matches their interests and ambitions. There is no pressure and no obligation, just practical guidance from people who understand the industry. While you’re here, take a walk through our studios, meet our students and experience South Africa’s only campus on a working production lot. Sometimes seeing an environment for yourself answers questions you didn’t even know you had.
Choosing a career will always be a big decision, but it doesn’t have to be guesswork. The best decisions are made with curiosity, honest conversations and a clear understanding of the opportunities ahead.
