There are few moments more rewarding than seeing one of our students recognised on the international stage. This month, Media City Academy proudly celebrates current student Sabelo Khomo, whose short film, Orì, has been officially selected for the Indie Film Awards in New York. The film will screen from 4 to 6 August alongside independent productions from around the world, marking an important milestone for the 23-year-old filmmaker from Hammarsdale.
Sabelo’s achievement is a reminder that powerful stories can come from anywhere. It reflects the determination, discipline and creative ambition that define so many emerging South African filmmakers, and we’re incredibly proud to celebrate this moment with him. While Orì was completed before Sabelo joined Media City Academy, we are proud to be part of the next chapter of his journey as he continues to grow as a filmmaker.
For our students, his success is a reminder that every project is an opportunity to learn, grow and find your voice. For those considering a future in the creative industries, it’s proof that South African storytellers have a place on the global stage. Congratulations, Sabelo. Your entire Media City Academy family is behind you, and we wish you every success as you represent South African storytelling in New York.
Your #MCA family is behind you every step of the way!
