A New Chapter Begins

The start of a new academic year often brings with it a sense of renewal. This year, that sense is more pronounced.

In March 2026, Media City Academy welcomed its inaugural cohort. The Class of 2026 arrives at a moment that carries both promise and responsibility. As the first intake, they will shape the tone, the culture and, in many ways, the identity of the institution as it finds its footing within the broader creative landscape.

What has been striking in these early weeks is the level of intent that students have brought with them. There is a clear sense that this is not a passive undertaking. Students have arrived ready to engage, to question and to test their own assumptions about what it means to work within the creative industries.

Learning Through Storytelling

Orientation week was designed to establish this from the outset. It focused not only on introducing students to the environment but on setting expectations for how learning would unfold. A key moment within that week was the visit to the Human Rights Film Festival, which offered students an early opportunity to engage with storytelling that is grounded in lived experience and social context.

The films presented a range of approaches. Agent 256 invited interpretation, prompting students to reflect on how meaning is constructed and understood. Chasing Glasses shifted the focus to personal narrative, opening a conversation around addiction and the role of the filmmaker in representing such experiences. Hearts Remember brought a different perspective, exploring dementia through the voices of patients, caregivers and families, and raising questions around dignity, access and care.

What followed these screenings was as important as the films themselves. Students began to interrogate what they had seen, not only in terms of content, but in terms of form. These discussions marked an early step in developing a critical language around storytelling.

Building a Creative Foundation

This engagement comes at an important point in the term, as students move into their Documentary Project Block. Over the coming weeks, they will begin to apply what they have observed, developing their own ideas and working through the process of bringing those ideas into form.

Beyond the classroom, there has already been movement in how the Academy engages with its wider community. The recent Open Day created an opportunity for prospective students and parents to encounter the environment in a practical way.

At the same time, early partnerships with industry players such as Black Brain Pictures, along with collaborations with platforms like LRJ Productions, signal an intention to remain connected to the broader creative ecosystem.

As we move further into the year, the focus will remain on building depth. There is a recognition that meaningful learning takes time, and that the development of a creative voice is an ongoing process.

To the Class of 2026, you are the first to take this step. The path is still being shaped, and you are part of that process. There is value in that, and there is also responsibility.
